Marilyn Monroe is a feminist icon born on the 1st of July of 1926. Her father abandoned her mother before she was even born, meaning that her mother could not look after her and she had to stay in her neighbour's house. From there, she went to an orphanage and started a period of going back and forth from orphanages to family members or neighbours' houses. 

Eventually, when she was 16 she married James Dougherty in order to stay away from orphanages. Although she did not love him, he respected her and supported her career as a model.  However, when Marilyn was asked to start a career in music and movies he refused and she decided it would be the best for both of them if they divorced. 

She had two other husbands, Joe Dimaggio, who abused her, and Arthur Miller, who started a film production company with her. She got a divorce from both of them because she felt that being a married woman required time she did not have and preferred dedicating fully to her career as an actress.
