Discrimination
Discrimination
I could give thousands of reasons why Spain can be considered a country with an ultra-right majority, but the main one of all, of course, is discrimination.
In Spain, we give the false illusion of being an open, advanced country. We repeat to ourselves ''Here we don't discriminate anyone'' and we believe the false statement that politicians repeat with a smile ''Spain is a culturally progressive country, there is no discrimination''. Maybe we do it because most of us are no longer affected by it, maybe we do it out of lack of empathy, but if one thing is clear, all these claims are false.
It seems that, when a society no longer discriminates, or at least not as much as in other countries, against larger minorities, discrimination disappears. But how many times have you heard that the Romani are a plague? How many times have you heard that all Muslims are terrorists and should go to their own countries? It is in these cases that society shrinks its mouth, and even the most ''progressive'' end up uttering some barbarity that Hitler could perfectly have said when he was talking about Jews.
Another similar claim is that, in Spain, homophobia does not exist because ''the gays can get married'' as if cis homosexual men were the only ones who form the LGBT+ community. Well, lately in Spain, there have been several transphobic protests and this hatred has grown so much that, less than a week ago, in Galicia, a trans woman was murdered by pushing her from a wall. Furthermore, non-binary people have been silenced and laughed at because according to those who discriminate them ''You are what's in your jeans, there's no way of not identifying with anything''.
In Spain, minorities are discriminated against and persecuted just as they were during the dictatorship and, whether society believes it or not, it is about time we put our smiles aside and start working on what matters most, ending discrimination.
