Nowadays, books and movies are becoming more critical of society, bringing real-life controversial topics to the big screen. Recently, a thriller about an armed theft in a gas station was published and it quickly became very controversial. The thing is it critiqued the US for having laws in favour of gun ownership, which clearly made those who support it mad. What is clear is that gun ownership has increased society’s brutality, bringing horrible situations in which children are killed in school shootings, suicide rates have gone up and there are more criminals.
A school shooting is an event in which a teenager or a professor commits mass murder in an educational institution, allowing gun ownership enhances the chances of this happening. Traditionally, school shootings occur when a person, especially teenagers, in a school have been bullied or marginalized to the point they want revenge and stop caring about consequences. According to the statistics, this event is more likely to take place in those countries in which gun ownership is legal. For instance, the US, a country known for its approval of weapon possession, is the country with the highest number of cases. This clearly shows that gun ownership raises the number of school shootings in a country.
Many studies have proven that, given that shooting is the fastest way to commit suicide, by allowing being in possession of a fire weapon, suicide rates go up. As stated earlier, guns are a quicker method to stop living, because you only need to introduce them in your mouth and shoot, without any suffering or any lookbacks. According to the World Health Organization, suicide rates are higher in those countries in which gun ownership is legal. Not only because it's easier, but because life tends to be tougher. That is why creating laws that accept gun ownership only rise the number of suicide cases in a country.
Some members of society usually believe gun ownership helps them protect themselves, but, in reality, it only intensifies the probability of a crime happening. For instance, crimes such as robbery or housebreaking are easier to perform if the thieve has a weapon. Moreover, these crimes also tend to be more violent, as those who do it are mentally unstable persons willing to shoot or kill. An example is those cases in which, during a burglary, the family in the house wakes up and most of the members die in a shooting. For all this reason, although some may believe guns help you protect yourself, the truth is that they do not.
To sum up, gun ownership has proved to increase society's brutality instead of protecting families in those countries in which it is legal. It enhances the chances of school shootings happening, suicide rates increase abruptly and criminals get access to dangerous weapons, making it easier for them to commit brutal assassinations. All of these pieces of evidence prove gun ownership is not a method of protection but of disgrace and murder and it should not be legal in any country.
